Topic 3 – Efficient and effective use of raw materials in design and production
We are seeking to join consortia as a scientific partner for the RAMP Joint Call 2026, specifically targeting projects under:
- Topic 3: Circular design of products and services
- Topic 4: Technologies for circularity, recycling, and recovery
- Topic 5: Non-technological aspects (business models, social acceptance, policy, and regulatory barriers)
- Topic 6: Life-cycle sustainability and resource efficiency assessments (supporting Topics 1 and 2)
Our Goal in a Consortium:
We want to collaborate with industrial partners, technology developers, and material scientists who require a strong scientific partner to handle system and material flow analysis, sustainability assessment, living lab processes, and the design of product-service systems (PSS).
We offer to:
1. Accompany, set up, and methodologically guide testing processes and pilot runs with technical partners.
2. Conceptualize and facilitate Living Labs to test circular products and product-service systems (PSS) in practice.
3. Perform Material Flow Analyses (MFA) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) based on the primary data generated by the consortium's technical partners as well as integrated secondary data from LCIA databases such as ecoinvent.
4. Design and develop socio-economic strategies, circular business models, and analyze policy / regulatory frameworks to overcome non-technological bottlenecks.
Please note: As the Wuppertal Institute does not operate its own technical testing laboratories, we do not perform physical material trials, etc. and would have to rely on physical infrastructure of the consortium, if necessary.

The Department of "Sustainable Production and Consumption" brings deep methodology-driven expertise to the RAMP Joint Call 2026, structured around three core pillars:
1. Transition Design & Circular Product-Service Systems (PSS)
We provide the structural frameworks to translate circular principles into industrial practice. We co-design, evaluate, and test circular business models (e.g., Product-as-a-Service), reverse logistics, and modular product designs. We do this by designing and facilitating co-creation processes in Living Labs to test concepts in practical environments alongside our partners.
2. Material Flow Analysis (MFA) & Value Chain Modelling
We apply quantitative Material Flow Analysis (MFA) at micro (product/firm), meso (sectoral), and macro (economy-wide) levels. We model scenarios for circular loops (e.g., high-quality recycling, remanufacturing, urban mining) to identify resource bottlenecks, critical dependencies, and potential optimization pathways.
3. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) & Sustainability Evaluation
We provide overarching scientific evaluations to ensure new raw material technologies align with the Sustainable by Design principle. Using data provided by our technical consortium partners, we perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), Ecological Footprinting (including carbon and material / MIPS footprints), and multi-criteria trade-off analyses.
