Topic 6 – Innovative approaches for analysing raw materials value chains
The Institute of Physical Chemistry (IPC) is primarily seeking to join high-impact international research and innovation consortia addressing Topic 6 and/or Topic 2, with a specialized focus on characterizing raw materials value chains and elucidating the fundamental mechanistic aspects of secondary raw materials recovery using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to ensure their high-value reintegration into industrial value chains.
IPC contributes advanced expertise in Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to characterize paramagnetic species, defect structures, and redox processes underlying recovery and recycling technologies, supporting the design of more efficient and selective secondary-resource recovery routes. This mechanistic understanding underpins the high-value reintegration of recovered materials into industrial value chains, and complements consortium-level efforts in material flow analysis and secondary feedstock integration.
IPC is particularly interested in projects that aim to:
• Quantify free radicals and transition metal oxidation states generated during core processing phases, specifically during the advanced recovery of valuable materials from industrial waste, end-of-life products, urban waste, mining waste, and other strategic secondary sources
• Decipher the precise molecular mechanisms of recycling processes and chemical upcycling operations (e.g., polymer pyrolysis, catalytic cracking, or biowaste valorization)
• Evaluate the kinetics of homolytic bond cleavage and persistent organic radical formation, providing robust structural metrics regarding the ageing, stabilization, and re-functionalization efficiency of secondary raw materials
• Support the comprehensive reintegration of secondary materials into manufacturing and production value chains through integrated circularity indicators, Material Flow Analysis (MFA), and scenario-based assessments to optimize holistic material recovery systems
While Topic 6 represents IPC’s primary domain of interest, our laboratory is highly open to contributing as a key partner under other RAMP topics, as Topic 2, where our advanced EPR expertise can add strict analytical value regarding Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), resource efficiency, industrial symbiosis, value chain analysis, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The Institute of Physical Chemistry – Ilie Murgulescu of the Romanian Academy (IPC – www.icf.ro) is a leading Romanian research institution dedicated to complex, interdisciplinary research in physical chemistry. Structured across 8 specialized laboratories, IPC covers a wide spectrum of fundamental and applied problems, from molecular structure and quantum chemistry to advanced materials, catalysis, and biophysical chemistry.
Backed by the Romanian Academy and the Ministry of Education and Research – the National Authority for Research, IPC actively participates in major EU, UNESCO, NATO, and inter-academic framework programs, driving direct industrial collaborations via targeted research contracts.
Dr. Gabriela Ioniță serves as the Head of the Laboratory of Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Structure at IPC. She holds extensive, proven experience as a Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Manager on national and international competitive grants. Her leadership track record includes:
National Grant Leadership (PNRR) - NextGenerationEU: Project Manager and PI of a major national grant funded via the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), focusing on Chemical host-guest molecular systems for health applications (advanced OMRI contrast agents for tracking inflammatory pathologies).
Represented Romania at European level as a Management Committee Member for COST Action CM1201, a high-impact network dedicated to Biomimetic Radical Chemistry. She played a key part in fostering international scientific cooperation, driving research strategy, and connecting Romanian community with broader European consortia.
Recently she participated in the calls: HORIZON-EIC-2025-PATHFINDEROPEN as project coordinator (score 4.35 out of 5); HORIZON-WIDERA-2026-02 as project coordinator (score 13.75 out of 15), and HORIZON-CL5-2026-02-D4-06 as partner (coordinated by the Netherlands).
IPC provides state-of-the-art EPR/ESR host infrastructure, advanced computational modeling tools (DFT, Molecular Dynamics), and specialized bio-testing facilities, ensuring rapid project execution and high-yielding scientific outputs for the incoming RAMP consortium.
