Topic 2 – Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials
We are seeking to join consortia as a scientific partner for the RAMP Joint Call 2026, specifically targeting projects under Topic 2 "Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials"
We aim to contribute our expertise in biomining, bioleaching, bioadsorption and microbial process engineering for the recovery of critical and strategic raw materials from secondary resources. Potential feedstocks include mining residues, metallurgical slags, industrial side streams, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), process waters, municipal waste streams, sewage sludge ash and other low-grade material sources.
Fraunhofer IGB is interested in participating in projects covering the entire value chain, from resource assessment and laboratory screening to pilot-scale validation and process integration. We can support consortium activities related to:
• Selective bioleaching of valuable metals and critical raw materials using microorganisms.
• Recovery of metals from complex waste streams and industrial residues.
• Bioadsorption and biosorption technologies for selective metal capture and concentration (bacteria, fungi and microalgae).
• Integration of biological and hydrometallurgical processing routes.
• Process scale-up, techno-economic assessment and sustainability evaluation.
We are particularly interested in collaborative projects that transform currently underutilized secondary resources into economically viable and sustainable raw material sources for Europe.
Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB is one of Europe's leading applied research organizations in industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and circular bioeconomy. The institute develops innovative biological and bio-based processes that support sustainable industrial transformation and resource efficiency.
Within the area of raw material recovery, Fraunhofer IGB possesses extensive expertise in biomining, bioleaching and bioadsorption technologies for the extraction and recovery of valuable and critical metals from secondary resources. Our interdisciplinary teams combine microbiology, bioprocess engineering, environmental biotechnology, analytical chemistry and process development to create efficient recovery routes for complex material streams.
The institute offers capabilities ranging from laboratory-scale screening and microbial strain development to process optimization and pilot-scale validation. This includes the work in S2 laboratories. Relevant competences include:
• Development of bioleaching processes for metal recovery from low-grade ores, mining residues and industrial waste streams.
• Microbial mobilization of critical raw materials and strategic metals.
• Biosorption and bioadsorption technologies for selective metal recovery from aqueous streams.
• Design and operation of bioreactors for metal extraction and recovery.
• Integration of biological and physicochemical separation technologies.
• Advanced analytics for metal speciation and process monitoring.
Fraunhofer IGB has extensive experience coordinating and participating in national and European collaborative research projects and supports industry partners in advancing technologies from laboratory research towards industrial implementation.
