Topic 5 – Putting Circular Economy Ambitions into Action
RCPE (Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH, Austria) would be interested in contributing to a consortia as a demonstration and technology partner for the bio/pharmaceutical/chemical sector.
As a European research centre focused on process engineering, RCPE bridges research and industrial implementation and can provide demonstration capabilities across a broad range of pharmaceutical manufacturing activities. Our contribution would be particularly relevant where new (re-)manufacturing approaches need to be demonstrated, validated and transferred towards industrial application.
RCPE could contribute across the pharmaceutical manufacturing value chain, including:
-API and drug substance manufacturing, including more sustainable, efficient and flexible production approaches.
-Drug product manufacturing, covering different dosage forms and manufacturing concepts.
-Biopharmaceutical processing, including relevant aspects of upstream and downstream processing.
-Continuous, modular and flexible manufacturing, supporting rapid adaptation and scale-up of production capacity.
-Digitalisation and advanced process control, helping to make manufacturing more responsive, efficient and robust.
-Sustainability and resource efficiency, supporting more resilient and future-oriented production as well as recovering/recycling of pharmaceutical waste or Out-of-spec material.
-Process development, scale-up and demonstration, helping to bridge the gap between innovative technologies and industrial manufacturing.
A particular strength of RCPE is the ability to combine different technologies and manufacturing steps in integrated demonstration scenarios, rather than focusing on a single unit operation or product.
RCPE would therefore see its role in a demonstration partner supporting the translation of innovative manufacturing concepts into industry-relevant applications, with a broad portfolio spanning the bio/pharmaceutical value chain.
The Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering (RCPE) has extensive experience in designing, implementing, and demonstrating innovative use cases at the interface of industrial practice and academic research. We act as a neutral, application-oriented research partner for the development and demonstration of digital tools, AI-based methods, and advanced material solutions in pharmaceutical engineering.
A core strength of RCPE lies in simulation and modeling. We develop and apply mechanistic, data-driven, and hybrid models across multiple scales—from particle and formulation behavior to unit operations and full production lines. This includes process modeling, population balance models, and system-level simulations to predict performance, identify critical process parameters, and support Quality by Design (QbD). These models form the basis for digital twins, virtual process design, and model-predictive control strategies in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Our expertise includes the integration of AI algorithms and virtual environments - such as digital twins - to model, optimize, and control complex pharmaceutical processes. These approaches are routinely applied in safety-critical settings, including laboratories working with hazardous or highly potent substances, where robust sensor infrastructures and strict regulatory requirements are essential.
RCPE operates state-of-the-art pilot plant facilities that enable the demonstration of complete end-to-end production routes - from continuous API synthesis and advanced formulation to next-generation manufacturing concepts. Within these environments, we implement and validate digital manufacturing tools, including process control systems, Process Analytical Technology (PAT), sensor-based monitoring, and data-driven decision support for real-time process optimization and quality assurance.
As a non-profit research organization, RCPE serves as an independent link between science and industry, fostering technology transfer and accelerating the adoption of digital and AI-enabled solutions in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Our mission is to make emerging key technologies tangible, reduce implementation risks, and support the sustainable transformation of pharmaceutical production systems.
