Continuos pyrolysis at TRL5, End-of-life batteries and PV modules
Topic 2 – Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials
The Environmental Research Group (GIM) at the Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB-CSIC, Spain) is looking to join international consortia for RAMP Topic 2: Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials.
GIM has more than 30 years of experience in thermochemical conversion technologies, with a strong focus on pyrolysis, gasification and circular economy solutions for complex waste streams. Our research activities include the pyrolysis of plastic waste, end-of-life tyres (ELTs), biomass residues, and composite materials such as wind turbine blades, aiming at the recovery of valuable materials, chemicals and energy carriers.
We operate and validate technologies at TRL-5 pilot scale, including auger-based pyrolysis systems and upgrading units for pyrolysis oils, supporting technology scale-up towards industrial implementation.
Our group has extensive experience in European collaborative projects, including:
BlackCycle, focused on the circular economy of end-of-life tyres through pyrolysis, recovery of recovered carbon black (rCB), pyrolysis oil upgrading and process scale-up. https://blackcycle-project.eu/
PYSOLO, a Horizon Europe project developing renewable-energy-driven biomass pyrolysis routes for the production of sustainable fuels and materials. https://pysolo.eu/
We are interested in collaborating with industrial and academic partners working on recycling, recovery of critical and strategic raw materials, thermochemical treatment of secondary resources, circular economy and industrial scale-up.
The Environmental Research Group (GIM) is a multidisciplinary research group within the Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB-CSIC) focused on sustainable energy and environmental technologies. GIM has extensive expertise in thermochemical conversion processes, particularly pyrolysis, gasification, and waste valorization, with more than 30 years of experience in the circular economy of end-of-life tyres, plastic waste, biomass, and other complex waste streams. The group operates pilot-scale facilities up to TRL 5 and has participated in several European projects.
The Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB-CSIC), located in Zaragoza, is a research institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) dedicated to energy, environment, chemical processes, and advanced materials. The institute conducts research in areas such as resource recovery, thermochemical processes, COâ‚‚ utilization, hydrogen technologies, catalysis, and sustainable industrial solutions, supporting both scientific excellence and technology transfer to industry.
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is Spain’s largest public research organization and one of the leading research institutions in Europe. CSIC comprises more than 120 research institutes and centers distributed across Spain, covering a broad range of scientific disciplines including natural sciences, engineering, energy, environment, materials science, biology, agriculture, and social sciences. CSIC plays a key role in European and international research initiatives, promoting scientific excellence, innovation, and collaboration with industry and public institutions.
