Topic 2 – Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials
We aim to develop an integrated methodology for the in-situ characterization, resource assessment and re-mining evaluation of legacy mine tailings deposits. Our project concept is based on J&C Bachmann’s X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) probe which is combined with Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) technology by external providers to allow fast and cost-effective tailings characterization that provides the basis for geological 3D modeling and resource estimation. The overall objective is to develop a standardized and transferable methodology for tailings characterization that can provide the basis for investment decisions towards re-mining of tailings across Europe.
We are looking for partners in the following areas:
1. CPT or Sensor Technology Partners
2. Tailings Site Partners
3. Geological Resource Modeling Partners
4. Environmental and Social Impact Partners, NGOs and Public Organizations
Further details on each partner profile are provided below.
1. CPT or Sensor Technology Partners
We are interested in CPT partners. The data produced by CPT and our XRF probe should be integrated into a joint output for the geological or mineralogical model. Additionally, we are interested in partners with expertise in other sensor technologies which produce relevant information for tailings characterisation, e.g. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) or optical. The goal is an integrated probe capable of providing horizontally and vertically resolved information on both the chemical composition and physical characteristics of tailings deposits.
2. Tailings Site Partners
We are looking for mining companies, site owners, geological organizations or public institutions with access to legacy mine tailings deposits or tailings storage facilities. Suitable partners should provide access to representative tailings sites for field testing and validation and have an interest in assessing remaining valuable or critical raw materials for potential re-mining.
3. Geological Resource Modeling Partners
We are looking for partners experienced in 3D resource modeling. The partner would use XRF, CPT and (if available) additional sensor data to model the spatial distribution and quantity of potentially recoverable raw materials. The objective is to develop reliable procedures that can support investment and financing assessments. Experience with CRIRSCO-aligned reporting codes, PERC, JORC or comparable standards and familiarity with the requirements of banks, investors and mining project developers is valuable.
4. Environmental and Social Impact Partners, NGOs and Public Organizations
Our technology provides cost-effective localisation of both valuable and toxic elements in tailings and aims to speed-up the process towards remediation. We are looking for partners investigating the impact of tailings remediation on environmental hazards and the social acceptance of mining.
J&C Bachmann GmbH is a German SME founded in 2009. The company develops X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology for rapid in-situ elemental analysis, which is used in industrial, mining and recycling applications. Our XRF probe for CPT application allows the characterization of tailings without the need for drilling.
