Topic 4 – Overcoming technological barriers to circularity
The Polytechnic University of Castelo Branco (UPCB), through the GreenUpPCB technological interface, is interested in joining or contributing to a transnational consortium addressing Topic 4 – Overcoming technological barriers to circularity.
GreenUpPCB focuses on extending the service life of industrial electronic systems through advanced PCB diagnostics, testing, repair, refurbishment, retrofitting and reverse engineering. Our activities combine electronics expertise with digital technologies, including AI-assisted diagnostics, machine vision and digital documentation, to support more sustainable maintenance and circular use of electronic components.
We are particularly interested in collaborative R&D projects addressing automated PCB diagnostics, repairability assessment, remanufacturing and refurbishment processes, reverse engineering of obsolete electronics, decision-support tools for repair versus replacement, and strategies for extending the lifetime of electronic equipment.
We are looking for European research organisations, universities, technology centres and industrial partners interested in developing and validating circular solutions for industrial electronics, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, transport, industrial automation and other applications affected by electronic obsolescence.
The Polytechnic University of Castelo Branco (UPCB) is a Portuguese public higher education institution located in the Centro Region of Portugal, with expertise in applied research, engineering, electronics, telecommunications and technology transfer.
Within UPCB, GreenUpPCB - Laboratory for Testing, Refurbishment and Reverse Engineering of Printed Circuit Boards is an initiative dedicated to sustainable industrial electronics and circular economy solutions. The laboratory develops capabilities in PCB diagnostics, testing, repair, refurbishment, retrofitting and reverse engineering, with the aim of extending the lifetime of electronic equipment and reducing electronic waste.
GreenUpPCB combines advanced electronic testing and rework capabilities with Industry 4.0 technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine vision, digitalisation and automation. Its main application areas include renewable energy systems, industrial automation and transport, with a strong focus on obsolete or difficult-to-replace electronic systems.
