Topic 2 – Targeting secondary sources to enhance access to raw materials
We are looking to join an existing consortium as a partner and can contribute one or two work packages.
Testing and modelling of secondary feedstocks in cementitious and earthwork mixtures. Laboratory programmes on mixtures with recycled aggregates, industrial by-products and mineral additives — mechanical and technological properties. We design the experiment as a multifactorial study and model the response surfaces in Design-Expert, so the outcome is not a table of single mixes but a validated model of how the factors interact, with optimised mix proportions and quantified significance of each factor.
Geotechnics of extraction from anthropogenic deposits — landfills, tailings, industrial dumps. In-situ investigation and sampling, laboratory determination of shear strength and deformation parameters, numerical stability analysis of excavation slopes, design of retaining structures, and independent geotechnical supervision. Recovery schemes are usually assessed for material yield alone; we make the excavation itself safe, buildable and costed.
Pilot works: supervision of execution, instrumentation and interpretation of monitoring data.
We can host secondments and contribute to training of early-stage researchers.
Looking for: a consortium with a partner in waste treatment, recycling or mineral processing, and an industrial partner able to supply secondary feedstocks in relevant quantities.
University North (Sveučilište Sjever) is a public university in Croatia, with campuses in Varaždin and Koprivnica. Its Department of Civil Engineering runs bachelor's and master's programmes in construction and covers soil mechanics and foundation engineering, building materials, structural mechanics and earthquake-resistant design.
The Department operates laboratories for building materials testing, for soil and foundation testing, and for non-destructive testing of structures, which together allow a material to be followed from characterisation of the feedstock through mixture design to the behaviour of the finished element.
The group publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals on construction materials and geotechnical engineering and presents its work at international conferences in the field. The University applies for and implements research and mobility projects on a continuous basis, and the Department has an established record of international research cooperation.
