Topic 3 – Efficient and effective use of raw materials in design and production
I am particularly interested in the **sustainable packaging/materials** aspect of the RAMP call. We have already developed **paper and bioplastic prototypes for plant nurseries from enset and other agricultural biomasses**, supported by **patents covering the bioplastic and paper technologies**. I would be interested in contributing this existing technology, biomass/cellulose expertise, prototypes and IP toward developing and scaling resource-efficient, circular packaging materials within the consortium.
**Manufacturing Industry Development Institute (MIDI), Ethiopia** is a public industrial research and technology-development organisation supporting the development, adoption and upgrading of manufacturing technologies in Ethiopia. MIDI works at the interface of research, technology development and industrial application, with activities covering technology development, process improvement, product development, technical assessment, technology transfer and support to manufacturing enterprises.
MIDI has experience in developing and validating locally sourced materials and technologies and in supporting their transition toward industrial application. Its capabilities include materials and process development, technology assessment, laboratory and technical analysis, prototype development and collaboration with universities, research organisations and manufacturing industries.
Within the RAMP consortium, MIDI can contribute expertise and facilities for **biomass valorisation, cellulose-based material development, prototype production and industrial technology translation**. In particular, MIDI has developed **paper and bioplastic prototypes from enset and other agricultural biomass resources for plant-nursery applications**, with associated intellectual property covering paper and bioplastic technologies. This provides an existing technology base for further optimisation, scale-up and validation of sustainable packaging and circular materials.
MIDI can therefore contribute a valuable **research-to-industry perspective**, connecting renewable biomass resources and materials innovation with manufacturing requirements, prototype validation and potential industrial deployment in Ethiopia.
