Topic 6 – Innovative approaches for analysing raw materials value chains
UFG offers an emerging academic research line on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to hemp-derived biomass and bio-based construction materials. This work is linked to NUPECC – Cannabis sativa Cultivation Research Center, an interdisciplinary research group primarily focused on Cannabis sativa cultivation and scientific studies.
Our possible contribution to a RAMP consortium would be to support the environmental assessment of hemp-derived residues as secondary feedstock for low-impact construction components, including comparative LCA, material flow analysis, end-of-life scenarios and sustainability indicators for circular value chains.
The Federal University of Goiás (UFG) is a public higher education and research institution located in Brazil. NUPECC – Cannabis sativa Cultivation Research Center is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to scientific studies on Cannabis sativa L., including its industrial, agronomic, technological and sustainability-related applications.
Within NUPECC, our research line investigates the potential use of hemp-derived biomass and residues as raw material for sustainable construction components. The team has experience in architecture and urbanism, construction technology, environmental assessment, bio-based materials, circular economy and experimental evaluation of non-conventional building materials.
Current activities include studies on hemp-based blocks for non-structural applications, involving biomass processing, material characterization, physical and mechanical performance tests, water absorption, fire resistance and environmental assessment. The group works in collaboration with laboratories and researchers from different areas of UFG, including architecture, agronomy, engineering and material characterization.
UFG/NUPECC can contribute to RAMP consortia by providing expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), circular value-chain analysis, sustainable construction materials and the Brazilian context for bio-based secondary feedstocks.
